New Year, New Me
As the clock strikes twelve on a New Year,
I can usually be found doing one of three things: celebrating, eating or sleeping.
I don’t have a very specific tradition for seeing in the New Year, yet I never
fail to scribble a few resolutions before that fateful last minute.
As can be expected these were always the clichés: ‘get fit’, ‘be healthy’, ‘get abs’, and as expected, these were never attained.
Until my final year in school, I had always scrawled these mindless resolutions
and then decided that for 2015, I actually wanted to stick to one. This was
the year that I went 365 days without eating chocolate. It sounds absurd, but I
wanted to challenge myself, and really didn’t go wanting with the amount of
cheesecakes, pastries and other desserts gracing my world.
Day one of 2016 was so satisfying as I sat
in a café in Paris eating a chocolate croissant, with an European Christmas and
a whole year without chocolate behind me. That moment had such a sense of
fulfillment and New Year’s had new relevance for me because now, I knew I could
achieve anything.
By reducing the number of New Year’s resolutions
you make, considering the relevance and importance of your resolutions and by making
them realistic, yet challenging, you are setting yourself up for success and not
failure. Odds are, ‘get abs’ isn’t going to work nearly as well as perhaps; ‘try a new group fitness class with a friend’. In 2016 I tested this method again, and finished the year with a university GPA that I
was proud of, and a more positive mindset than I had in years.
This brings me back to the now. 2017.
- TAKE RISKS
- SAVE, SAVE, SAVE
- BE TRUE TO MYSELF
- WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER
- GIVE MY ALL IN EVERYTHING I DO
By striving to be true to myself, I have
started this blog. Whilst pursuing one of my interests by studying psychology,
I also want to acknowledge my other passions. My passion for writing, art and
photography. Through this blog I will be able to stay sane during the times of
lab reports and statistics, and express myself artistically. This is a New Year's resolution I can stick to...abs can wait for another day.
